BEIJING — China will enhance its traffic management and warning system on expressways to prevent traffic accidents especially in severe weather, the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) said on Nov 17.

The ministry required local traffic administrations to establish information networks with weather bureaus and expressway operation agencies to offer warnings.

The MPS also ordered police to check highway sections where fog often occurs and introduce measures including speed limits and flow controls to keep traffic in order in frozen or foggy sections.

Traffic and highway operation agencies were advised to prepare emergency supplies and rescue equipment at congested or frozen sections, said the ministry.

At least 18 people were killed on Nov 15, as over 30 vehicles collided in fog on an expressway section in East China’s Anhui province.
