Vice-premier stresses importance of social sciences in higher education

Vice-Premier Liu Yandong stressed the importance of the speech given by President Xi Jinping on building up philosophy and social sciences last week during a symposium held in Beijing on May 25.

Liu said that colleges and universities should develop a deeper understanding of Xi’s speech as they are the major force in the field of philosophy and social sciences.

She added that colleges and universities should adhere to Marxist philosophy and carry out a development strategy that emphasizes study of both the subjects. And the content should be further strengthened by integrating development of students, science and academic subjects.

She said that a deeper reform is needed for the management of research and development, making full use of talent, intellectuals and subjects, improving the quality and quantity of the original academic works and promoting innovative environment, to build think tank in colleges and universities with Chinese characteristics.

Liu said that a coordinated social science and philosophy system in colleges and universities requires a strengthened leadership and management system to create a step by step plan and develop a better academic environment.
