Vice-Premier Liu Yandong called for an innovation driven development strategy during an inspection trip to Shanghai on Nov 7.
She made the remarks at a symposium on strengthening original innovation while commemorating the 50th anniversary of artificial total synthesis of crystalline bovine insulin.
The vice-premier pointed out that China realized the artificial total synthesis of crystalline bovine insulin 50 years ago, a milestone in the development of science and technology of world history. She then urged scientific and technical workers to increase efforts in innovation, and achieve great results through following the footsteps of previous generations. She also urged authorities to increase support for fundamental research, build up a batch of high level scientific research bases, cultivate talents and create a good academic atmosphere for them.
In addition, she praised the construction of the Shanghai science and technology innovation center, saying it is part of the national strategy, and will play a guiding role in the country’s innovation development. She asked local government to build a regional innovation system with sound functions.
The vice-premier also inspected the educational reform and healthcare reform of Shanghai.
