XIAMEN -- The successful experience of Fujian province was held up as an example at a conference held by the Food Safety Committee of the State Council on Nov 12 and 13 in the province’s coastal city of Xiamen.

On behalf of Vice-Premier Zhang Gaoli, also chairman of the Food Safety Committee, Vice-Premier Wang Yang addressed the conference and stressed that food-safety guidelines by the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the State Council as well as instructions by Party chief Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang should be implemented earnestly.

Wang called on authorities in other provinces to learn from the experience of Fujian in promoting food safety.

Wang pointed out that since taking the lead in addressing “table pollution” from 2001, Fujian has achieved remarkable results. The authorities should reinforce food safety management “from the farm to the table”, and improve laws and regulations as well as enforce the assessment system, he said.

He reiterated that local governments should complete the reform of the food and drug safety system by the end of this year; and suggested setting up model counties for agricultural product safety and model cities for food safety, which will help improve food safety nationwide.
