Vice-Premier Liu Yandong said organizers of the Youth Olympics should follow the central leadership’s instruction to produce a cultural and sports event for young people with an emphasis on friendship - and also with Chinese characteristics.

Liu made the comments during a two-day inspection in Nanjing which started on Aug 5.

She visited various venues for the Youth Olympics including the main operation center, security center and sports sites.

She said all preparations are basically completed, thanks to the joint efforts of Jiangsu province, the city of Nanjing and relative central departments.

She also said that priority should be given to security, service and friendship among youth athletes worldwide, and the opening ceremony should illustrate the Chinese Dream, an idea raised by President Xi Jinping, through presenting the dreams of the youth, which can help realize dreams pursued by people around the world.

Liu added that organizers should pay special attention to production safety, food safety, public health, disease prevention and transportation management so as to provide good service and comfortable environment for relevant groups.

The Chinese sports delegation should do their best to prepare for the event as well as for friendly interaction with young athletes from around the world.

The Youth Olympics in Nanjing will be the only world sports event hosted by China before 2020. More than 8,000 athletes aged between 15 and 18 and government officials will take part, along with 3,000 journalists.
