State Councilor Yang Jiechi stressed the importance of cooperation with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons when he met Ahmet Uzumcu, its director-general, in Beijing on June 9.

The Chemical Weapons Convention, which went into force in 1997, has played an irreplaceable role in disarmament and non-proliferation, Yang said, and is a key element of the international security system.

China values the convention and supports its goals and purposes, and will fulfill all its obligations, Yang said, noting China’s willingness to continue its cooperation with the organization.

Uzumcu appreciated China meeting its full obligations and praised China for the significant role it has played in the organization which he said will further enhance communication and cooperation with China.
