Premier Li gave instructions on family planning work on the national teleconference which was convened in Beijing on Jan 7.

The new policy allows couples to have two children and aims at balancing long term population growth, Premier Li said.

“Governments of all levels should improve supporting policies concerning education, employment, housing and social security in preparation for changes expected to be brought forward,” he said.

Vice-Premier Liu Yandong attended the conference. She urged upgrading health services for women and children.

“We should take measures to curb birth defects, improving the medical capabilities of pediatric and obstetrical departments, as well as advancing gender equity in society,” Liu said.
