Premier Li Keqiang said on March 9 that the government will fully support enterprises tackling the issue of insufficient pensions.

He made the comments during a discussion with National People’s Congress (NPC) deputies from Heilongjiang province.

“Many retired workers made a great contribution to building our country when they were young, so we should not let them down in their old age,” Premier Li said, following a deputy’s speech about enterprises facing difficulties in paying pensions in a timely manner.

He acknowledged that the increased ratio of pension plans could put a greater burden on low-profit enterprises amid the downward pressure of the economy, and promised that the government will try to fill the gap for companies tackling this issue.

The Premier also said that local authorities should never misuse pension funds which aim to ensure people’s livelihoods.
