The 19th annual World Wetlands Day falls on Feb 2, 2015, and this year’s theme is “Wetlands for our future.”

To date, China has wetlands in a total area of 53.6 million hectares, forming nearly 6 percent of its area. The country has been making efforts to protect its wetlands by increasing finance and setting up a fund for wetland resource conservation, as well as returning grain plots to wetlands.

Last year, the Chinese government has spent over three hundred million dollars in wetlands projects. Nearly six hundred wetland natural reserves and more than nine hundred wetland parks have been established.

Areas of wetlands under conservation in China have increased 13 percent from a decade ago, to nearly half.
