BEIJING — Vice-Premier Sun Chunlan called for joint efforts of society to prevent shortsightedness among young people on the 24th National Eye Health Day on June 6.

Sun, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, required central and local authorities to fully implement the program, which was released last August by the Ministry of Education and seven other departments to curb myopia among children and teenagers.

When visiting a children’s culture center in Beijing, Sun told the children to form good living and study habits to protect their eyesight.

Sun pointed out the necessity of enough outdoor activities for the students, and the need to restrict the duration of electronic teaching.

Sun also called for more eyesight health education in schools and communities as well as strengthened eyesight examination and preventive measures to curb myopia.
