There should be more policy support to promote the economic and social development in old revolutionary areas, said Vice-Premier Wang Yang on Nov 27.

He made the remarks in a symposium on the development and construction of the old revolutionary areas held in Beijing.

Wang said that getting rid of poverty in old revolutionary areas should be a top priority.

We shall never forget the contributions that the people in old revolutionary areas have made to the socialist construction, Wang said. It is our historic responsibility to promote the development in these areas, he added.

Wang urged to speed up the building of highway, railway, water conservation, electric power and network. He also called for the development of industries such as distinctive agriculture and red tourism.

“We have to make more efforts to strengthen the ecological construction and environmental protection, and promote sustainable development in the old revolutionary areas,” said Wang. “We shall also improve the basic public service level, make up the shortfall in the areas such as education and health care, and strengthen social security in these areas,” he added.
