China will commit to further empowerment of women by encouraging female entrepreneurship in a bid to achieve gender equality, Vice-Premier Liu Yandong said on Oct 13.

Liu made the remarks at a meeting to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Beijing World Conference on Women.

“For the past 20 years, China has reinforced legislation and policy support in the spirit of the conference, to help women play a significant role in social and economic development,” Liu said.

She added that China has made remarkable progress in improving women’s living and development conditions, and protecting their rights, such as participation in politics.

“The government will also seek to narrow gaps between different communities of women by sparking their interest in practicing entrepreneurship,” Liu said.
