The government should ensure that the Belt and Road Initiative gets off to a good start this year, and local authorities should make more efforts and be more courageous to overcome tough obstacles during the process of implementing the initiative, Vice-Premier Zhang Gaoli said at a conference in Beijing on July 21.

China should focus on the building the New Eurasian Continental Bridge as well as important economic corridors such as the China-Mongolia-Russia corridor, the corridor linking China with the Indo-China Peninsula and the corridor that connects China with Central and West Asia, Zhang said.

The country should also have long-term, friendly and reciprocal cooperation with important countries along the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, and speed up the construction of major and basic projects for the Belt and Road Initiative, he said.

Provinces across the country should clarify their roles and strengths to make better contributions to the initiative, he added.
