Vice-Premier Wang Yang chose Tourism Day on May 19 to endorse the sector’s development to combat poverty during an inspection tour in Enshi, Hubei province.

Rural tourism is an effective way to alleviate poverty and increase farmers’ incomes, Wang said. Environmental protection, tourism development and poverty alleviation are complementary and preferential policies should be provided for more people in need to participate in this sector and benefit from it, Wang added.

Nestled in the Wuling mountain range, the resource-rich Enshi Tujia and Miao autonomous prefecture has achieved a great deal in pulling people out of poverty by developing rural tourism.

Wang emphasized the importance of protecting the culture and tradition of ethnic groups, improving transportation infrastructure and scientific development after he inspected several ethnic villages in the area.
