BEIJING — China is contributing to the global effort to address climate change, Vice-Premier Zhang Gaoli said on Nov 17.

Zhang made the remark as he met with Christiana Figueres, executive secretary of the secretariat of the United Nations framework convention on climate change.

Zhang said the Chinese government attaches great importance to the issue of climate change. Noting that China has announced post-2020 goals, Zhang said this will greatly accelerate the transformation of China’s mode of economic growth and the pursuit of green, low carbon, sustainable growth.

Figueres spoke highly of China’s policy on climate change and its latest goals. She expects China to continue to play an active and constructive role in pushing for an agreement at the Paris Climate Summit in 2015 as planned.

Zhang said climate change is a global issue that requires a common response by all countries. He said all countries should implement existing agreements and push for an agreement in Paris in 2015 on the basis of “common but differentiated responsibilities”.
