Vice-Premier Liu Yandong called for people-to-people exchanges between China and Southeast Asian countries to contribute to building the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road.

Liu made the remarks in a speech at the second China-Southeast Asia High-Level People-to-People Dialogue in Indonesia on May 31.

Liu said the Belt and Road Initiative aims to achieve deeper and higher-level regional cooperation in a wider range of areas, which is a goal shared by the people of China and Southeast Asian nations.

She said she believes that the Belt and Road routes will greatly boost win-win cooperation among these countries and lead to economic cooperation and cultural exchanges, and ensure peace and prosperity.

The vice-premier said people-to-people exchanges have played a significant role in promoting relations between China and Southeast Asian countries - as they are geographically close.

Regarding the further development of China-Southeast Asia relations, Liu suggested that the two sides should broaden the people-to-people exchanges channel and push forward the formation of exchange and cooperation networks made up of think tanks, NGOs, media, as well as industrial and commercial cycles.

The dialogue, under the theme “Closer People-To-People Exchanges for the Joint Development of the ‘Belt and Road’”, was also attended by Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Sok An, Indonesian former parliamentary speaker Marzuki Alie, ASEAN Deputy Secretary-General A.K.P. Mochtan and 200 other representatives from China and Southeast Asian countries.

On the sidelines of the dialogue, Liu met with Southeast Asian delegates’ representatives and attended a cultural exhibition titled “Yesterday and Today of the ‘Belt and Road’”.

The dialogue adopted the Declaration of Proposals on China-Southeast Asia People-to-People Exchanges and Cooperation and urged for the establishment of a China-ASEAN community of common destiny.
