State Councilor Yang Jiechi met with UN Deputy Secretary Jan Eliasson at Zhongnanhai in Beijing on April 9.

Yang highlighted the fact that this year marks the 70th anniversary of the ending of the anti-fascism war as well as the 70th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. As a founding nation of the UN and one of the nations that endorsed the UN Charter in San Francisco 70 years ago, China has always supported the democratization of international relations and insisted that the UN play a crucial role in international affairs, Yang said.

Every country should carry out practical measures to comply with the UN Charter and its principles, Yang added.

Elaisson said that the UN will continue to promote multilateralism and praised China’s constructive role in international affairs that showed its determination to be a positive force in upholding the UN Charter to prevent war and maintain peace.
