Vice-Premier Ma Kai said that governments at various levels should enhance their efforts to build and maintain highways.

Ma made the comments during a recent visit to Shandong province, adding that more of the funds to build highways should go to central and western regions, especially impoverished regions.

He said the authorities should push forward reforms to improve maintenance of highways, and thus improve highway safety.
