BEIJING — Beijing has set the goal of making progress in becoming a top international capital over the next five years.

Energy-intensive, heavily polluting industries will be phased out and the density of PM 2.5 airborne particles will continually drop, according to the city’s new development goals unveiled at the ongoing 12th Beijing Municipal Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

Cai Qi, secretary of the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee, announced the development goals when delivering a report at the municipal Party congress, which opened on June 19.

The capital will make new improvements in the ecological environment and wide promotion of green production and lifestyles.

In the report, Cai listed the goals of taking the lead to build an all-around prosperous society, making the 2022 Winter Olympics a great success, new progress in integrated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and quality improvement of city development.

The city’s average annual density of PM2.5 fell 23.7 percent last year, compared to 2012 levels. Some 1,500 manufacturing and polluting companies have been closed in Beijing in recent years.

The capital is striving to improve its function as the country’s political, cultural, international exchange and innovation center.
