China opposes US official’s meeting with Dalai Lama

China is strongly displeased with and opposed to the meeting of a senior US official with the Dalai Lama — in disregard of Beijing’s frequent representations, said Hua Chunying, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, on July 13.

Hua was reacting to reports that Valerie Jarrett, a senior adviser to the US president, attended an 80th birthday “celebration” for the Dalai Lama in New York on July 10.

“We urge the US to stick to its promise to acknowledge Tibet is part of China and not to support its ‘independence’. We urge the US to take practical measures to right the wrong, eliminate harmful outcomes and stop offering any convenience or support to ‘Tibet independence’ forces, in order to avoid disrupting or damaging the China-US relationship,” Hua said.
