A working conference on spring agricultural production was held in Xiangyang, a city in Central China’s Hubei province, on March 16, to deploy work on enhancing agricultural production, developing rural industries, innovating agriculture operation models and upgrading farm machinery.

Premier Li Keqiang gave instructions at the conference, calling for strengthening management over agricultural production in spring to maintain the stability of economic development.

Local governments should give priority to developing agriculture and the countryside, carrying on supply-side reform in agriculture to boost its transformation and high-quality growth. Administration of farmland and plowing in the spring must be enhanced to ensure grain is sown. Supportive measures for grain production should be implemented thoroughly, the Premier said.

He also urged upgrading agricultural machinery and pushing forward development of high-standard cropland. In this way, the productivity of grain and other agricultural products can be lifted to guarantee the stable development and effective supply of important farm products.

Favorable policies should be given to Internet Plus agriculture and people who return or go to the countryside to start their own businesses. Meanwhile, rural reform should be carried out steadily, including poverty alleviation and renovating living environments, to lay a solid foundation for rural revitalization and the blueprint of building a moderately prosperous society in an all-round way.

Vice-premier Hu Chunhua also addressed the conference and said that more work should be done to ensure grain security, push forward the supply-side structural reform of agriculture, and improve the profitability and competitiveness of the industry.

He stressed the priority of the grain supply and other agricultural products, and called for efforts to stabilize grain output, optimize production structure, and enhance farmland quality and technology input.

Meanwhile, animal husbandry should be expanded based on local conditions with standard scale breeding, strict control of African swine fever, and better production layout, he said.

Hu called for support to secondary and tertiary industries based on agriculture and rural resources, and machinery farming and disaster prevention also were stressed in his speech.
