Premier Li Keqiang met with Achim Steiner, administrator of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), in Beijing on Nov 1.

Premier Li said that the UNDP is the first agency of the United Nations that established cooperative relations with China after its reform and opening-up.

Over the past 40 years, bilateral cooperation between the two sides in various fields has been fruitful, and has promoted China’s economic construction and social development, he said, adding that China will remain a developing country for a long time with inadequate and uneven development.

China looks forward to combining its own development plans with the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and will continue to strengthen cooperation with the UNDP, the Premier said.

He also pointed out that unilateralism and protectionism in the current international situation have brought instability and uncertainty.

As a permanent member of the UN Security Council and the largest developing country, China is willing to work with the UN agencies, including UNDP, to uphold multilateralism and the international order with the purposes and principles of the UN Charter at its core, and to address global challenges, helping the world to enhance capabilities for independent and sustainable development under the framework of South-South cooperation, and making contributions to the peace and development of the world, the Premier said.

Steiner said that the UNDP has established a good partnership with China and the two sides have carried out extensive cooperation in China and around the world.

The UNDP appreciates China’s support for multilateralism and the UN’s role, and is willing to deepen cooperation with China in fields of innovation and sustainable development, promoting South-South cooperation and sharing experiences of development, he added.
