Premier Li Keqiang said at a National Day reception on Sept 30 that 67 years after the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the nation has witnessed tremendous development, and people’s lives have been dramatically improved.

Premier Li was speaking at the Great Hall of the People, after extending his sincere greetings to the people.

This year marks the beginning of the 13th Five-Year Plan, he said, adding that the country has had new achievements in economic and social development against a variety of challenges, by pushing ahead supply-side structural reform while keeping aggregate demand in a reasonable range of growth.

“Through exercising macro-control in an efficient way and adhering to reform and opening up, we kept the economy running smoothly, optimized the economic structure, invigorated new driving forces, and improved people’s livelihood,” said Premier Li.

“China effectively addressed devastating floods at home, greatly securing people’s life and property. China successfully held the G20 summit in Hangzhou, and reached consensus on building an ‘innovative, invigorated, interconnected and inclusive’ world economy. Chinese athletes competed in the Rio Olympics and the Paralympics, inspiring their countrymen to strive for modernization of the country.”

Premier Li said that a prosperous country is the foundation of enhancing people’s well-being. Economic construction should be firmly seized, with one hand keeping the middle and high speed of economic growth and preventing various market risks, and the other hand improving the country’s creativity, comprehensive competitiveness and sustainable development level with the goal of pushing the national economy to reach the middle and high ends.

Meanwhile, common concerns of the general public should be given much attention with practical and powerful measures to help them attain more sense of accomplishment in employment and entrepreneurship, with increasing incomes, more satisfaction in social security with appropriate access to health and medical resources, pension and residential places, and a stronger sense of security in environment protection and food security with more efforts to improve life quality and accelerate poverty alleviation, according to the Premier.

In addition, law-based governance should be comprehensively promoted and property protection of various ownership economies should be strengthened to allow all market entities to equally participate in the competition, improve the fairness and accessibility of public services and let more people benefit from the reform and development achievements, Premier Li added.

Premier Li also said the government will further promote comprehensive reform by improving policies that facilitate development, and release more opening-up measures by boosting cooperation with other countries on the Belt and Road Initiative and international capacity. “Prompt and effective action is the most important thing for the obstacles,” said the Premier.

In addition, he said China will stick to the “one nation, two systems” policies, supporting peace and harmony in the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macao. China will also stick to the “peaceful reunification, one country two systems” policies, sharing common opportunities with compatriots across the Taiwan Strait.

Abiding by the principle of peaceful development and win-win cooperation, China is willing to explore common interests with other countries and work with them to advance the peace and development of mankind.

Accompanied by joyful music, guests from home and abroad drank a toast to the 67th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, to prosperity for the country, good health and happiness for the Chinese people and to the hope of everlasting friendship with people from other countries.
