Premier Li Keqiang visited the Yangtze River embankments at Yueyang, Hunan province, on July 5, inspecting its flood control work.

The Premier urged efforts to secure the Yangtze River main dike, and protecting embankments along the branches if possible.

The Premier encouraged local leaders to protect their hometown, saying that it also amounts to protecting the country. He also asked them to consider people’s life and property as their priority.

The Premier also went to Dongting Lake and stood on the dam to inspect the flood-prevention work.

As this year’s flood season is short with heavy rainfalls, water levels at Dongting Lake surpassed its alert level.

The Premier said that Dongting Lake is part of the overall flood control work of the Yangtze River. He called for ensuring the solidity of dams for rivers and lakes in the basin.

Premier Li headed for Chengzhong village as soon as he got off the train. He was relieved that more than 200 villagers had all been relocated.

Flood control is a major weakness in city building, and we must speed up the construction of underground pipelines, the Premier said.
