Premier Li meets with overseas Chinese delegates

Premier Li Keqiang met with attendees of the 8th Conference for Friendship of Overseas Chinese Associations at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on June 2.

Premier Li congratulated the successful convening of the conference and through those representatives extended his greetings and best wishes to more than 60 million Chinese people living overseas.

The Premier said that the Chinese nation is a big family and each member of it holds not only a strong sense of national identity, but strong awareness to guard the Chinese cultural foundation. Overseas Chinese, inheriting excellent quality of Chinese nation, including diligence, tenacity and inclusiveness, have created extraordinary achievements and spread seeds of friendship at residing countries. Meanwhile, they have actively participated in China’s construction and development and made important contributions to the prosperity of the motherland and home country.

China has become world’s second largest economy after over 30 years of reform and opening up, with increasing economic power, comprehensive national strength and international influence, Premier Li noted. However, China is also the largest developing country and there is still a long way to go to achieve modernization.

Facing domestic and international difficulties and challenges, we will continue to deepen reforms and opening up to strive in developing a new economy, foster new driving forces, and transform and upgrade traditional driving forces to develop tremendous resilience and potential of Chinese economy. The country’s economy will be able to maintain a medium-to-high-speed growth and reach medium-to-high-end levels after a series of efforts, he added.

During the meeting Premier Li made three proposals to the representatives: First, being the “gold ribbon” for friendly cooperation between China and foreign countries. Overseas Chinese can contribute as a bridge for communications in all sectors in a world where economies are deeply integrated and personnel exchanges are increasingly expand, promoting world peace and open development.

Second, being the “participant” in China’s innovation development. To realize economic transformation and upgrades, China should depend on innovation-driven development and transfer its focus from relying on natural resources to human resources. China is still the most attractive place for investment. Furthermore, it is a new land for intellectual investment. Overseas Chinese are welcomed to go back to China for investment and innovative entrepreneurship.

Third, being the “bridge” for peaceful reunification. People on both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to the same family. Overseas Chinese are expected to continue concerning and supporting the peaceful reunification and make contribution to cross-Strait peaceful development.

At the end of the meeting, Premier Li expressed his wishes that in abidance by local laws and customs, overseas Chinese associations could lead overseas Chinese to integrate into local economic and social development and make much more contributions.

Hosted by Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council and China Overseas Exchange Association, the 8th Conference for Friendship of Overseas Chinese Associations is attended by more than 700 leaders of overseas Chinese associations from 136 countries and regions.
