China backs UN in playing bigger international role

Premier Li Keqiang met with Mogens Lykketoft, president of the 70th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations, on Oct 27 in Beijing.

As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China supports the UN to play a bigger role in international affairs. China would like to work with other countries to abide by the principle of the UN Charter, promote peace and development and maintain world peace and stability, Premier Li said.

Development is key to resolving poverty and conflict around the world, and China would like to boost South-South cooperation, enhance South-North dialogue and push forward international cooperation, the Premier said.

China would like to push forward the reaching of a comprehensive, balanced and powerful agreement during the Paris climate change summit based on the principle of common but different responsibilities, he added.

Lykketoft spoke highly of China’s efforts in maintaining world peace, promoting development and implementing the agenda of the Sustainable Development Goals.

The UN would like to work with China and other countries to implement the consensus reached during the summit of the 70th anniversary of the founding of UN and push forward peace and development around the world, Lykketoft said.

The two sides also exchanged views over joint concerns in international and regional issues.
