Premier Li Keqiang on Sept 2 praised the Hungary-Serbia Railway as a “landmark cooperation project” and called for joint efforts to further boost progress.

The Premier made the remarks in a meeting with Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic, who is in Beijing to attend activities celebrating the 70th anniversary of victory in the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression (1937-45) as well as World Anti-Fascist War.

While acknowledging both countries’ wartime sacrifices, Li called for greater cooperation between Beijing and Belgrade in economy, trade and industrial capacity.

“China is willing to work closely with Serbia and Hungary to make further progress on the Hungary-Serbia Railway, which will contribute to regional connectivity and economic development,” Li said.

Li said the “16+1” meeting mechanism has evolved into a platform for friendship and cooperation between China and 16 Central and Eastern European nations. China will host a leaders’ meeting under the mechanism for the first time this year.

Nikolic said Serbia is willing to learn from China’s development and welcomed the Chinese business community to invest in the country’s infrastructure.
