DAVOS, Switzerland — The upgrading of the Chinese economy will make an important contribution to the stability and development of the global economy and finance, Premier Li Keqiang said on Jan 20.

The Premier made the remarks during a meeting with Klaus Schwab, founder and executive chairman of the World Economic Forum (WEF), on the eve of the WEF annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland.

The Premier said China has maintained a positive momentum in economic development amid complex domestic and international situations and will continue to implement a proactive fiscal policy and prudent monetary policy, with emphasis on structural reforms.

The economy is moving toward a more advanced form, with a complex division of labor, and greater structural solidity, he said.

The improvement in the quality and efficiency of the economy and its upgrading not only lays a good foundation for future development, but also makes important contributions to maintaining global financial stability and the healthy development of the world economy, he added.

The premier hailed the WEF’s significant influence on the international economy, saying this year’s theme, “New Global Context”, is closely related to the development of the international situation, with a clear goal to explore the challenges and opportunities facing mankind.

China is ready to deepen cooperation with the WEF and hopes the forum will continue to play an active role in promoting the understanding between China and the international community, he said.

Schwab welcomed Chinese guest to the WEF meeting, saying he looked forward to Li’s keynote speech at the opening ceremony, which will inject China’s insight and voice into the world economy and the global agenda.

China’s role has become increasingly important in the international political and economic system, and the WEF is willing to enhance cooperation with China and support China playing a more important role on the international stage, Schwab said.

Premier Li Keqiang, accompanied by China’s leading entrepreneurs, arrived in Switzerland on Jan 20 to attend the forum, and will also pay a working visit to Switzerland.

He will also meet representatives of the forum’s International Business Council and hold talks with the President of the Swiss Confederation Simonetta Sommaruga.
