China pushes building of China-Mongolia-Russia economic corridor

China is constructing an economic corridor connecting China, Mongolia and Russia under the One Belt One Road initiative. Erenhot and Manzhouli in China’s Inner Mongolia autonomous region are two pilot areas for the project.

A China-Mongolia cross border economic cooperating zone is being constructed in Erenhot, the largest land border port connecting the two countries.

Traditional trade, processing trade, and e-commerce are among the major businesses being developed in the zone. The city also is working on improving traffic interconnectivity and facilitating cargo clearance and transportation.

“At the next stage we’ll actively support a special logistic program called ‘Mongolia-Russia Connect’, so that the traditional trading client can catch up with the development,” said Luo Qing, mayor of Erenhot.

In the other pilot zone of Manzhouli, the local government is accelerating the construction of an electronic port to promote convenient customs clearance.

The city has started eight China-Europe container trains departing from such cities as Suzhou and Chongqing. Goods transported via the Manzhouli railways can reach Europe in 15 days.

“The marketization degree of the block trains are very high, that goods loaded on the return trip are very abundant. The launching and regular operation of the cross-border trains have opened a highly efficient and convenient logistic channel connecting China and Europe,” said Han Xianjun, municipal party secretary of Manzhouli.

It is expected that the first phase of a border trade district in Erenhot will be put into operation in August, and the comprehensive tax-free zone in Manzhouli will begin operations by the end of this year.
