Whereas the action one stage has come to an end, another one has just started. The love story of an emperor and one of the four most beautiful women in Chinese history has been brought to the stage at the Huaqing Palace in Xi’an, Shaanxi province.

The performance is adapted from the poem A Song of Unending Sorrow by Bai Juyi, a renowned poet of the Tang Dynasty (618-907). The poem narrates the tragic love story of Emperor Xuan’zong and his favorite concubine Yang Yuhuan.

It’s a tale known to all Chinese people, and this adaptation is told through song and dance, enhanced by the modern technology of acoustics and dazzling lights. And to truly bring the story to life, the show is set in Huaqing Palace — the very place where the tragic love took place over a thousand and three hundred years ago.
