Top leaders demand all-out efforts to rescue Chinese tourists

BEIJING — President Xi Jinping demanded all-out search and rescue efforts for the 28 Chinese who were onboard a boat that lost contact with marine authorities in Malaysia on Jan 28.

He asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Chinese Embassy in Malaysia to maintain close contact and cooperation with authorities of Malaysia, and China’s transport and tourism authorities to activate emergency measures immediately to assist the rescue.

Premier Li Keqiang has issued an instruction urging Malaysia to do everything it can to rescue missing Chinese tourists.

The Premier also urged Malaysia to properly handle related matters according to the protection mechanism for overseas Chinese citizens and maintain their legal rights.

Malaysia should also cooperate with relevant departments in China to assist the family members of lost tourists and update them with the latest information, Premier Li added.

The Premier reminded outbound tourists during Spring Festival to further strengthen their safety awareness and take any necessary measures to ensure their safety.
