High-precision speculum passes tests with flying colors

Photo taken on Aug 21, 2018 shows a high-precision silicon carbide aspheric speculum boasting a four-meter magnitude. This gigantic 1.6-ton “mirror” with a four-meter diameter, a product generated through nine years of research and exploration and 18 months of processing, passed acceptance tests on Aug 21, at the Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, in Changchun, capital of Northeast China’s Jilin province. This is the latest accomplishment of the manufacturing system for high-precision silicon carbide aspheric speculums of four-meter magnitude, a national major scientific and research equipment development project. It marks China’s ascension to the top of the field for heavy-caliber silicon carbide aspheric speculums. [Photo/Xinhua]
