Who would have thought that drawings using the humble ballpoint pen could be so beautiful? Many people who would never have imagined such artworks were able to see pictures depicting traditional Chinese architecture — drawn with a ballpoint pen — which went viral on Sina Weibo, a Chinese Twitter-like social media platform.

The pictures managed to vividly depict the architecture, leading many netizens to express their admiration — saying that the paintings looked as if they were in 3D. Some even compared the drawings to Qinghua porcelain, the famous blue and white porcelain of China, saying these different art forms embody the beauty of traditional Chinese culture.

The pictures were posted on the official Weibo account of People’s Daily on Jan 26, and they were reposted more than 11,000 times — receiving 18,000 likes.

They are the work of a young man from Linfen city, Shanxi province, who goes by the name “zhugeqingjia” on Weibo. He wrote — in his posts — that some of his works were inspired by traditional Chinese poems, or based on classic Western sculpture and architecture.

As it not easy to erase any errors when using a ballpoint pen, it takes artists a great deal of time and effort to create one artwork — obviously requiring much patience.
