China's National Science Week opened on Sunday with the theme of "building an innovation-oriented country."
Nearly 3,000 scientific activities will be carried out around the country.
"The whole of society should create an innovation-oriented country," said State Councilor Chen Zhili at the opening ceremony.
She said China should connect scientists with the general public to make sure scientific achievements serve social and economic development, which will benefit the people.
The National Science Week will promote the Guidelines for the National Long and Medium-term Science and Technology Development Plan, by showing the innovation capability of enterprises, drawing on the youth for scientific research, serving the country's overall goal in building the new countryside and publicizing public safety and emergency management.
The Beijing Municipal Government will host a park fiesta on promoting the Beijing Olympics as well as a healthy lifestyle. Shanghai is to exhibit its plan on increasing research and development skills.
The Tibet and Xinjiang autonomous regions will also organize exhibitions to improve public scientific awareness.
National science event to take place next week
National Science Week, China's annual nationwide science publicity event, will focus on showing China's capability in conducting innovative scientific research and development.
Li Pu, an official with the Ministry of Science and Technology which organizes the science week, said the 2006 National Science Week, from May 21 to 27, will promote the Guidelines for the National Long and Medium-term Science and Technology Development Plan.
The event will show innovative capability of enterprises, draw on the youth for scientific research, serve the country's overall goal in building the new countryside, and publicize public safety and emergency management, Li said. full story>>
China to launch science promotion week in May
China is to launch a week-long science promotion campaign this May, highlighting the scientific concept of development with priority on innovation.
An official with the Ministry of Science and Technology said in Beijing Thursday that the government will focus on publicizing the National Guidelines for Medium-and Long-term Plans for Science and Technology Development among the people during the 2006 Science and Technology Week, which is scheduled from May 20 to 26 throughout the country.
The official said a series of activities including exhibitions, symposia, forums and other events concerning scientific innovation will be held during the campaign. full story>>
